John Murtha today said he saw signs of military progress during a brief trip to Iraq last week, but he warned that Iraqis need to play a larger role in providing their own security and the Bush administration still must develop an exit strategy.
"I think the 'surge' is working," the Democrat said in a videoconference from his Johnstown office, describing the president's decision to commit more than 20,000 additional combat troops this year. But the Iraqis "have got to take care of themselves."
Violence has dropped significantly in recent months, but Mr. Murtha said he was most encouraged by changes in the once-volatile Anbar province, where locals have started working closely with U.S. forces to isolate insurgents linked to Al Qaeda.

Gillian GibbonsGillian Gibbons faces 40 lashes - and the British Government has shown its anger by summoning the Sudanese ambassador in London as a "matter of urgency".

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez warned his supporters on Friday that anyone voting against his proposed constitutional changes would be a "traitor," rallying his political base before a referendum that would let him seek unlimited re-election in 2012 and beyond. Brandishing a little red book listing his desired 69 revisions to Venezuela's charter, Chavez exhorted his backers to redouble their efforts toward a victorious "yes" vote in the Dec. 2 ballot.
"He who says he supports Chavez but votes 'no' is a traitor, a true traitor," the president told an arena packed with red-clad supporters. "He's against me, against the revolution and against the people."
His speech followed the recent high-profile defection of his former Defense Minister Gen. Raul Baduel, a longtime ally who called the president's proposed reforms a "coup." Others have also broken with the Chavista movement in recent months, including politicians of the small left-leaning party Podemos.
Chavez's opponents accuse him of concentrating power and seeking to be president-for-life like his close friend Fidel Castro of Cuba. Chavez insists he will only stay on as long as Venezuelans continue to vote for him.
"If you don't approve (the referendum), maybe we'll have time for a parachute jump in five years," Chavez, a former paratrooper, told the crowd. "But if you wish—if you approve the referendum—I will stay as long as God wills! Until the last bone of my skeleton dries out!"
The proposed revisions would do away with presidential term limits, extend terms from six to seven years, let Chavez appoint regional vice presidents and eliminate Central Bank authority, among other changes.
Critics warn he would also have the power to shut down Venezuelan newspapers, television and radio stations by declaring a state of emergency, and the government could detain citizens without charges during such a period.
Chavez insists the reforms are meant to deepen democracy and give Venezuelans more of a voice in government, especially through neighborhood-based "communal" councils.
He said he plans to increase funding for the councils to 5 percent of his government's 2008 budget, or $3.2 billion, that will go toward neighborhood projects from public housing to road paving.

Yesterday, the strike of rail and subway workers that has crippled France for nine days was clearly crumbling, as workers began returning to work in large numbers and union branches conceded that support for the dispute is collapsing.
"We think a dynamic of return to work has begun," Julie Vion, a spokeswoman for France's state-owned railroad network, SNCF, said.
Union leaders began to concede defeat yesterday. "We have to face reality. Since yesterday's negotiations, things have changed. The strike is no longer the solution. The strike strategy is no longer winning," a leader of the Sud union representing Paris underground railway workers, Philippe Touzet, said in an interview with Bloomberg News.
The collapse of support for the strike by individual rail workers marks the first success in what Mr. Sarkozy considers the key goal of his presidency, the abandonment of expensive entitlements and special conditions for public sector workers, including generous early retirement and pension benefits for half a million rail workers, which he believes make France uncompetitive.
Managers for SNCF announced yesterday that 42 out of 45 rail union committees have voted to abandon the national strike that has frozen the country's economy, and will return to work without delay.

CHICAGO (CBS) ― U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-7th District) said Wednesday he was the victim of racial profiling. CBS 2's Mike Parker reports, the congressman insists the only reason he was pulled over by Chicago police is because he is black. "I hope that this was some kind of isolated instance, but I know in my heart of hearts, I know that it's not," Davis said. The congressman said he was driving three friends home early Monday morning when two white Chicago police officers pulled him over and said he had swerved over the center line before making a left turn from Kedzie onto Douglas Boulevard. The congressman was nailed with a $75 ticket and a date in traffic court on Dec. 28. He denies doing anything wrong. "There was just no reason I could conjure up other than the fact that there were four black people in a car," he said. Chicago police confirmed that a ticket was issued but said nothing about Davis' allegation that he was singled out for what he calls "driving while black." A recent survey suggests that 59 percent of African-Americans believe they've been racially profiled in traffic stops by police. The congressman said police need to put an end to it. "Something needs to happen and it needs to be real. And we're just a better city than that," Davis said. He intends to fight the ticket he says was "simply wrong." Davis is calling on city leaders to "bridge the gap" between police and the minority community.

For sure, I thought I would get to ask the Yucca question that was APPROVED by CNN days in advance."

Now the last debate with Tim Russert, now that was half a debate. Supervisor Tom Ammiano, who authored the ID card legislation, said the program is a smart public safety measure because it would make residents living on the social margins of San Francisco more likely to seek the help of police and could give them more access to banking services. "People are afraid to report crimes," Ammiano said, referring to illegal immigrants who avoid local law enforcement authorities over fear of being arrested or deported by federal immigration officials. The legislation would require companies holding city contracts to accept the municipal card as a legitimate form of identification - except in cases where other state and federal laws require other forms of proof of age, name and residence. Under San Francisco's sanctuary ordinance, it is city policy that no municipal government personnel or resources be used to assist federal immigration officials in the arrest and deportation of illegal immigrants.

Many people, knowing that I'm Jewish, have asked me if I was deeply offended by Ann Coulter's observation that Jews are unperfected Christians. I could tell that I disappointed them when I said that I wasn't even slightly upset.
For one thing, I am not religious. What people do or don't believe, theologically speaking, is none of my business, except in the case of Islamics who want the rest of us dead or at least kneeling to Mecca.
But how is it my concern what people believe if it gets them through the bad times or it helps them to lead decent lives? I think the Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule make a lot of sense, but I don't feel the need to believe that Noah set sail with the world's largest zoo or that Jonah set up housekeeping in the belly of a whale. In the immortal words of Ira Gershwin, I'm of the opinion that it ain't necessarily so. But, heck, I've been wrong before, and I have two divorces to prove it.
Although I've never met Ms. Coulter, I'm a fan of hers. Not only do I nearly always agree with the woman, but I think she's an awfully good writer. She's got a nice style – straightforward and extremely sprightly. Occasionally, she even makes me laugh, which is something that the other pundits quite wisely never even attempt.
Unlike most of the non-religious people I know, I am not opposed to religion. In fact, I tend to prefer believers to agnostics and atheists. They don't seem to be nearly as self-righteous and self-important. Perhaps it's unavoidable that if a man doesn't believe in a superior power, it tends to make him view himself as the center of the universe.
Some time ago, I wrote a piece in which I contended that there were large numbers of Muslims who thought that blowing up innocent women and children was a sure path to paradise, whereas Christians believed that a lifetime of good deeds was a better way. I realized that I was using shorthand to get my message across, but I was hardly prepared for all the e-mail I received from disgruntled Christians, all of whom wanted to remind me that good deeds meant nothing, and that the only way to get past the Pearly Gates was to accept Jesus Christ as one's savior.
I didn't object to their setting me straight, but I must confess I found the notion that if, on their deathbeds, Charles Manson and Osama bin Laden accepted Jesus into their hearts, they would get to heaven, but my grandparents wouldn't, rather unsavory. But, as I said, what other folks believe is their business.
It's by their actions that I judge people. And in my experience, American Christians are essentially kind, tolerant, admirable people. I did not take Ann Coulter's statement as an example of hate speech. Frankly, I don't believe she has an anti-Semitic bone in her body. What I do find bizarre is that so many Jews, who side with the Arabs against Israel and whose children applauded Ahmadinejad at Columbia University, are demanding Coulter's head on a pike.
Finally, we shouldn't forget that Coulter has a new book out. By uttering those few rather benign words on Donny Deutsch's show, she has garnered a million dollars worth of free publicity, guaranteeing that "If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans" will be a blockbuster.

A senior diplomat close to the IAEA said a top Iranian nuclear official turned over the uranium metals document at a meeting in the agency's headquarters in Vienna last week.
IAEA inspectors came upon the document accidentally in 2005 while examining Iranian nuclear facilities suspected to have military dimensions. Iran had allowed inspectors to look at but not make copies of the document for investigative purposes.

IN many towns and cities, the newspaper is an endangered species. At least 300 daily papers have stopped publishing over the past 30 years. Those newspapers that have survived are struggling financially. Newspaper circulation has declined steadily for more than 10 years. Average daily circulation is down 2.6 percent in the last six months alone.
Newspapers have also been hurt by significant cuts in advertising revenue, which accounts for at least 75 percent of their revenue. Their share of the advertising market has fallen every year for the past decade, while online advertising has increased greatly.
At the heart of all of these facts and figures is the undeniable reality that the media marketplace has changed considerably over the last three decades. In 1975, cable television served fewer than 15 percent of television households. Satellite TV did not exist. Today, by contrast, fewer than 15 percent of homes do not subscribe to cable or satellite television. And the Internet as we know it today did not even exist in 1975. Now, nearly one-third of all Americans regularly receive news through the Internet.
If we don’t act to improve the health of the newspaper industry, we will see newspapers wither and die. Without newspapers, we would be less informed about our communities and have fewer outlets for the expression of independent thinking and a diversity of viewpoints. The challenge is to restore the viability of newspapers while preserving the core values of a diversity of voices and a commitment to localism in the media marketplace.

And the rule should be modified only for the largest markets.
A company that owns a newspaper in one of the 20 largest cities in the country should be permitted to purchase a broadcast TV or radio station in the same market. But a newspaper should be prohibited from buying one of the top four TV stations in its community. In addition, each part of the combined entity would need to maintain its editorial independence.
Beyond giving newspapers in large markets the chance to buy one local TV or radio station, no other ownership rule would be altered. Other companies would not be allowed to own any more radio or television stations, either in a single market or nationally, than they already do.
This relatively minor loosening of the ban on cross-ownership of newspapers and TV stations in markets where there are many voices and sufficient competition to allow for new entrants would help strike a balance between ensuring the quality of local news while guarding against too much concentration".

5. Purchase something. Buy a cup of coffee so you can claim to be a legit customer. Have 1 book ready to purchase. The last thing the owners want is a lawsuit for throwing well behaved people out of a public place because of their political views.
6. Pepper Hannity with questions. Ask why he supported Ted Nugent's rants about killing Hillary and Obama. Do your research ahead of time. (Coulter, Pat Robertson, etc...)
7. Silently turn your back on Hannity and Levin when they speak to the crowd. Let them preach to our asses and backsides.
One only has to look at the keyword's here to see that dave is being disingenuous when he say's he wasn't going there to start trouble.

Let's look at some more fact's:
1. The bookstore in question was privately owned, and not public property. If one causes a disturbance interfering with the ability of the owner's or patron's to conduct business they can be asked to leave, or removed.
2. Sean Hannity is a private citizen, and business man, he is not a politician, nor does he set policy. He was there to promote his product at the invitation of the store owners, and Dave admit's to having planned to interfere their abilities to conduct business pre-meditatedly.
3. He referred to NYC's finest, who no doubt probably posess more brevity, and courage than dave posesses in one of his nose hairs, as "Brownshirt's"
4. davefromqueens is a pompous A$$.
Now about the video. It doesn't show what happened before, or after to davefromqueens only the removal, not the cause, and effect of it. Hmmm, convenient huh?
As far as that one guy in the video claiming someone shoved his camera, I didn't see a hand, and if in fact it was one of Hannity's security detail, or the police, why was this guy allowed to walk but not the davefromqueens, who seemed to have done far less. Hmmm, suspicious huh?
In fact the video seem's like poorly produced street-theatre.
It seem's to me the one hardcore thing the video did show was the owner's, patron's, Sean Hannity, and his people acting with civility, and respect.
The video showed the typical leftist talking point's, and insult's directed at conservatives, and not fact, or truth.

Although Hollywood's never been quite the bastion of conservatism, there was a time however when it was a pillar of patriotism, and anyone who was not on America's side in Hollywood were the ones in the closet. The Hollywood of old had many star's who rose to the occasion to defend America, and it's values, during war time, a lot of them put on the uniform, and served. Excess, and debauchery were guarded secret's, patriotism was worn like a badge of honor.
Those times have long since changed however, and the recent spate of post 9/11 anti-war movies clearly reflect's where Hollywood's heart is. A lot of celebrities these day's seem more prone to kiss the ring's of despot's, and dictator's, or snuggle up to the ant-establishment than to support our own president, and troop's in a time of war.
If Hollywood want's to gain the heart, and respect of the American people again, they can start putting out movies that support America, and it's soldiers, and stop being arrogant shill's for a particular party's line. I for one would much rather enjoy some good old fashioned patriotism along with my popcorn.
